Cal State San Marcos Student Recipient of Heaviland Landscape Managment Scholarship
VISTA, CA, April 8 — Heaviland Landscape Management awarded its first-ever scholarship to Carla Pinto, daughter of Heaviland team member Samuel Pinto.
Carla is a junior at California State University San Marcos and is majoring in Liberal Studies. She grew up in San Marcos and is working towards a career as an elementary school teacher for her hometown school district.
Because of her outstanding academic record and dedication to helping teach and mentor children, Carla was selected for the Heaviland Scholarship. Not only does she have a 3.58 GPA, but she also spends her free time working with kids. Carla has volunteered with multiple organizations, including a Migrant Education Program supporting children of migratory farm workers; a STEM service learning outreach program; and Pencils of Promise, which helps build schools and increase literacy rates in Ghana, Guatemala, Laos and Nicaragua.
A key component of Heaviland’s culture is its emphasis on continuous education and training. Heaviland’s President and Owner, Tom Heaviland, created the scholarship to extend his support of education to the broader Heaviland family. Many friends and family members of Heaviland employees applied for the scholarship, but Carla was exceptional. “Carla is the type of candidate we look for,” Tom said. “She is a talented and inspirational young woman, and we couldn’t be happier to help with her education. We wish her the best of luck in her future teaching career.”
