Tom Heaviland leads the landscape management and installation company he co-founded in 1985 with his late father Ron Heaviland. As President, he executes the vision and strategy of Heaviland Landscape Management and leads a curated and cultivated team of gifted and passionate landscape management professionals. He encourages a workplace culture of servant-based leadership, citing its guiding principles as the cornerstone of the family company.

Mr. Heaviland is a graduate of Bemidji State University in Minnesota with a B.S. in Business Administration. He is a Landscape Industry Certified Manager and Landscape Industry Certified Technician. Under his leadership, Heaviland Landscape Management maintains clients such as the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Callaway Golf Company and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

Mr. Heaviland is a recipient of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. He has been recognized as a Trailblazer by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and he is a past president of the California Landscape Contractors Association, San Diego Chapter.

Fun fact: Mr. Heaviland tried out for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team; while he didn’t make the cut, the team famously won the gold medal.

Rajan Brown

Rajan Brown

Rajan Brown entered the field of landscape architecture and environmental design to create more sustainable cities through water-efficient landscape design, ecosystematic design and progressive water management strategies. As Vice President of Resource Management at Heaviland Landscape Management, Mr. Brown oversees operations, planning and strategy for the landscape design, construction and resource management departments.

Mr. Brown earned his B.A. in Legal Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara and his M.S. in Landscape Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and MBA from California State University, San Marcos. He is a Certified Landscape Water Manager, Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor and LEED Green Associate. Mr. Brown has worked with the California Coastal Commission and the Municipal Water District of Orange County among others.

Mr. Brown has received recognition for his planning, design, installation and humanitarian projects, including the WaterSmart Landscape Renovation Award 2013, Landscape Design Build Award 2014 and the Landscape Construction Renovation Award 2014. Mr. Brown is a member of the Horticulture Department Advisory Committee for Mira Costa Community College and the California Urban Water Conservation Council Landscape Steering Committee.

Fun fact: Born in Lima, Peru, Mr. Brown has traveled to six continents and over 25 countries searching for fun waves, tasty meals and incredible vistas.

Christopher Gillespie

As a former Marine, Chris Gillespie discovered he had a knack for assessing and solving complex logistical situations and decided to make it his career upon completion of his military service.

Chris now oversees all maintenance operations for Heaviland Landscape Management, focusing on implementation of operations in the most efficient and effective manner, while maintaining a high standard of customer service and quality.

Chris holds an MBA from California State University, San Marcos, where he also completed his undergraduate degree in Finance. He holds his Qualified Applicator License (QAL) certification from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

Chris was awarded two Navy Achievement medals during his 10 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, including one for fixing a broken logistical process in Iraq in 2004 and improving a system that made supply chain operations more effective. His exceptional logistical work in the military has translated to his current position at Heaviland Landscape Management.

Fun fact: A big fitness fanatic and golfer, Chris also enjoys surfing, cooking, and recently started cycling.

Leeann Storino

Leeann Storino

Leeann Storino is responsible for Heaviland Landscape Management’s financial policies, accounting practices, maintenance of fiscal records and preparation of financial reports. She also oversees human resources and administrative functions for the company.

Ms. Storino earned her B.S. in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and her M.S. in Accounting from National University. She is a Landscape Industry Certified Manager (LICM), a Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence through the American Society for Quality, a Certified Lean Six Sigma Sensei through Villanova University and a certified California Senior Professional in Human Resources through SHRM. She is currently the Treasurer of the Celo Pacific Cycling Club of Carlsbad.

Fun fact: Ms. Storino is a former professionally ranked mountain bike competitor and a three-time California State Masters Cyclocross Champion (2011, 2013, 2014).

Bernard Buggs

North County Branch Manager

As Senior Division Manager, Bernie Buggs is responsible for overseeing operational aspects of the North County (San Diego) branch of Heaviland Landscape Management. He fosters the relationships between the company and each client, ensuring landscaping needs are met and exceeding customer expectations. He enjoys operating within a small business team and working in an outdoor environment.

A graduate of University of Wisconsin - Stout, Mr. Buggs holds a B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management with a minor in Business Management and Property Management. He is a Landscape Industry Certified Manager and is certified as a Recycled Water Site Supervisor through the San Diego County Water Authority.

Mr. Buggs has had a distinguished career managing all aspects of business operations and was recognized as Regional Manager of the Year on four separate instances during his time at previous employers Elkor Properties and G.W. Willams Co. He is directly involved in large landscape management projects such as Thermo Fisher Scientific, CBRE and Cushman & Wakefield.

Fun fact: Enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys, Cameron and Connor. Mr. Buggs plays competitive team tennis and is a lifetime member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

Christopher Favret

As Division Manager for the North County (San Diego) branch of Heaviland Landscape Management, Chris Favret is in charge of building a strong relationship between customers and the company throughout the regions of Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido and San Marcos. His enthusiasm for the outdoors and working with plants shines through in his interactions with each landscaping client.

Mr. Favret has been in the landscaping industry since high school, and he earned his B.S. in Landscape Contracting from Pennsylvania State University. He is a Certified Professional Horticulturist through the state of Maryland and is certified as a Recycled Water Site Supervisor through the San Diego County Water Authority. Mr. Favret has more than 15 years of industry experience both in residential and commercial landscape management.

Fun fact: Mr. Favret enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and dogs.

Robert Garcia

Robert Garcia, knowledgeable in every aspect of the landscape management business, has worked his way up from an irrigation technician to a Division Manager and now our full time trainer at Heaviland Landscape Management. He has 12 years of experience within the industry and has been part of the Heaviland team for four years.

Mr. Garcia is a Landscape Industry Certified Technician in Ornamental Maintenance and is certified as a Recycled Water Site Supervisor through the San Diego County Water Authority. He manages two of Heaviland Landscape Management’s largest accounts: the City of Poway and the Poway Business Park.

Fun fact: Mr. Garcia plays guitar and rides dirt bikes in his free time.

Christian is focused on fostering new relationships in the industry as well as developing HLM’s key accounts portfolio. Other responsibilities include the implementation of a holistic marketing approach, delivering the brand promise and bringing awareness to how the company provides another level of added value to our client’s real estate.

Mr. Heaviland earned his B.S. in Regional Development with a minor in Marketing at the University of Arizona. He is currently working towards his MBA at Point Loma Nazarene University. Christian is Landscape Industry Certified and is certified as a Recycled Water Site Supervisor through the San Diego County Water Authority.

A San Diego native, he began with the company as a part-time employee, making him the third generation of his family to work at the company. He soon discovered a passion for landscape management and the green industry. Mr. Heaviland eventually came on board full-time to hone his business and leadership skills with Heaviland.

Fun fact: Mr. Heaviland is a hot yoga enthusiast and embodies an adventurous, go-get-em lifestyle.

Oscar Hernandez

South County Branch Manager

Raised in San Diego, Oscar Hernandez began his horticulture career working at a nursery retail center. He honed his leadership skills and horticulture knowledge while in management at a national retail garden center for 10 years. As Division Manager of the South Bay office of Heaviland Landscape Management, he assists clients in managing and improving their landscaping. He enjoys working outdoors and creating attractive landscapes for clients.

Mr. Hernandez is a Landscape Industry Certified Technician. He specializes in irrigation management and planning appropriate landscaping based on the varied micro-climates within San Diego County. Among other properties, he has managed the United States Olympic Training Center landscaping in Chula Vista for more than five years.

Fun fact: Mr. Hernandez has a son, Angel, and a daughter, Ariana, and is a lifelong San Diego Chargers fan.

Martin Silva

As Construction Project Manager at Heaviland Landscape Management, Martin Silva directs landscape construction and enhancement crews, supervises landscape installation and coordinates multiple teams and landscaping projects. Mr. Silva works with clients directly as well as with suppliers and subcontractors, communicating and facilitating all aspects of a landscaping project. He enjoys working outdoors, and his career in landscape management allows him to find satisfaction in overseeing design/ build projects from concept to completion.

Mr. Silva is a graduate of Centro de Bachirato Technilogico Agropecuario #159 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico with a B.S. in Agriculture and Soil Science. He is Certified Keystone Retaining Wall Installer and is certified as a Recycled Water Site Supervisor through the San Diego County Water Authority. Mr. Silva is also a Landscape Industry Certified Technician in the fields of Irrigation, Ornamental Maintenance, Turf Management and Softscape Installation.

Mr. Silva works with many notable Heaviland Landscape Management projects including the City of Poway, Legoland and the University of California San Diego campus. He was a recipient of the CLCA Landscape Construction Award (2014), CLCA Landscape Design Build Award (2014) and the CLCA WaterSmart Landscape Award (2013).

Fun fact: Mr. Silva enjoys spending time with his family and taking his grandson to Disneyland and Legoland.

Bryal Wirth

Bryal Wirth collaborates with current and prospective Heaviland Landscape Management clients in designing and estimating their landscape renovations. With a passion for environmental planning and design, she has developed a niche in site mapping for water management initiatives.

Ms. Wirth holds a B.S. in Landscape Architecture from California Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is a Certified Water Manager Candidate and is also pursuing her LEED Green Associate accreditation.

An active member of the landscape design industry, Ms. Wirth is an Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) San Diego Young Professionals Committee member, a Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) San Diego Membership Committee member and represents Heaviland at other local industry association events such as the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW). She is also Chair of the Heaviland Landscape Marketing Committee, spearheading those efforts for the company.

Fun fact: A nature enthusiast, Ms. Wirth enjoys finding new hiking trails throughout San Diego County and working on her collection of plant macrophotography.
